is to buy a big honkin' worm gear set, and machine some spacers and stuff to mount it.
which means i gotta spend โฌ50, and wait for like a month for the gear to get here. and also for the lathe (delivery date unknown). booo

i want to become mediocre at everything.
i speak ๐ฌ๐ง๐ณ๐ฑ well, i'm currently learning ๐ฏ๐ต, and i can maybe read some other stuff

at first I read this as "looking my best for the quill feed" and thought you were putting on a suit for it
I haven't had a chance to review your solution to this. My quill has a fine feed and it is also driven with a worm gear. It has a little ball-detent-located dog tooth clutch for engaging it. I have a partial drawing for it that I need to wrap up.
i haven't really drawn out anything yet. just thought about it a bit and measured some things. think i'll probably need a lathe to get it done, and it's unclear when the one i ordered will arrive.
the current rough plan is to buy a big worm gear set off aliexpress (maybe something like this), and machine some stuff to interface it to the quill handle (probably in the place where the depth stop ring currently mounts)
I had never even considered looking on AliExpress for this kind of part. In the US we have McMaster-Carr. It's like an everything store for industrial supply, welding, materials, parts, and tools. You can also buy standardized components like gears, bearings, fasteners, and pulleys. All online.
Good service. Usually full CAD drawings for every part. The downside being that they are kind of pricey.
Anyway, another side effect of this being located in the states is that a lot of the stranger stuff is strictly imperial. My combo machine has imperial leadscrews, but is otherwise metric. I had been planning to make my own finer-feed assembly as a result.
I also have a friend that replaced the fine feed on his mill when he converted it to CNC. Supposedly he's gonna give me the whole assembly, which I would then retrofit in some way.
oh yeah i know about mcmaster carr, i'm hella jealous of it. i look at it for inspiration sometimes.
aliexpress is easier to buy from, though, although the stuff they have is also spottier. a lot of it's OEM parts for other stuff, and you kinda have to look around to find something you can make work. still, it means i wouldn't have to cut the gears, just some spacers and brackets. probably machine a handwheel too, that seems like a fun project.
i gotta mull it over a little bit more, then i'll probably buy the gear. it'll take like a month to get here, maybe i'll have my lathe by then
my combo machine is one of the precursors to like 3 different current combo machines with various brand names on them. I really should have been looking on aliexpress for parts a long time ago.
I am reeling. This would be so easy to retrofit to my existing millhead
tbf mcmaster carr has worm gears in a similar price range from what i saw earlier
