What even are hats?

JRPGs, VNs, other games and stuff I think are interesting, maybe some writing and/or gamedev if I feel like it?

So, one of the major recurring mechanics in the Disgaea games is the Senate, which is how you do...a lot of things, really. Things like upgrading the shops, unlocking new classes, unlocking bonus areas, and all manner of other stuff depending on the specific game demand that you go before a bunch of entrenched bureaucrats who couldn't care less and convince them to do what you need them to.

Naturally you're expected to outright bribe them to get what you're after, with each senator randomly deciding what they think of each item in your inventory.

This leads to some silliness. For instance, earlier today in one of my multiple failed attempts to get belts added to the shop I had one senator give me a "does not want" reaction to two sticks of gum I had...while that same senator listed a separate piece of ABC gum (you get it when you use the regular gum on a character, do the math yourself) as "Must have!"

...I am not going to examine that particular result any further, and honestly neither should you

It's been like 10 years since I played Disgaea 1 but hearing someone talk about interfacing with its mechanics for the first time is a joy to my day I didn't know I needed

I'm pretty sure I know why the senator liked that thing by the way but I'm going to just not talk about it because these games are way more fun when you untangle the mechanical spaghetti yourself
