hey so during one of yr thrifting videos, you had really strong negative opinions on the tripods on display. do you have recommendations for a good tripod? we're specifically looking for one that's good for stills. — alphy

I haven't bought a new tripod in an extremely long time so I can give no specifics but I will say these two things

  • manfrotto is always a safe bet

  • the super cheap ones on Amazon etc look about ten hundred times better than anything I've EVER found in a thrift store. for some reason every single one I've seen in a thrift store in my life was 40 years old, even when i was looking in 2000. I have not bought one but I strongly suspect the no name ones are tolerable based on the pictures.

in reply to @cathoderaydude's post:

I have three that run the gamut - a Bogen By Manfrotto:tm: that probably cost three to four figures SRP, a Slik 500G which probably cost about fifty bucks new, and a $6-or-so JOILCAN sixltr sludge unit I keep in my car.

of the three, the JOILCAN gets the most use by far, by virtue of it being available and quick to set up (snap-latches are so much better than screw-downs for tripod legs.)

what I can recommend, is that it is the heaviest tripod you are comfortable with using; and that if you do look at used ones, make sure absolutely everything is working. so many thrift store ones are just outright broken or missing parts, and often way overpriced.

I'd say 4/5 thrift store tripods have no head and the head cannot be found on the internet, making the tripod worse than worthless. that's always the first thing I tell to anyone thrifting for tripods
