an important thing to know about New England politics is that the New Hampshire House of Representatives has 400 members and some of them represent northern rural areas where the population is, primarily, moose

so any time you see a news article about "shocking bill proposed in New Hampshire legislature," please understand that this unruly throng is constantly proposing shocking bills. this is simply their natural behavior and it is safe to observe from a distance.

Oh yeah, my town is on the town meeting system and it is extremely direct democracy. We actually don't have a mayor, we have a "town manager," because every decision is put to a town-wide vote, including extremely routine stuff like fixing up the baseball field or buying a new snowplow.

(In practice these motions almost always pass because on some level people are aware that having a "but that costs money" argument about every little thing is not the way to run a town. But we do get "citizen's petitions" for weird conspiracy theory stuff. The upcoming one is demanding the town meeting stop using electronic voting because of Voter Fraud. yes I'm sure there is rampant voter fraud in the hot hot matter of rezoning Lot 797 for a pickleball court)

It didn't affect much except the local bear population, who discovered quickly that there were no rules about bear-safe trash disposal and had all the fun with this you'd expect. Also no rules against buying the bears donuts, although I think they banned that recently.
