All fandom is to some extent built on imagining a version of the thing you're a fan of that is 'better' (in some sense, to your own sensibilities). I'm convinced that in some cases fans have imagined so hard that they have created tulpas that threaten to devour the original work.

I'm pretty sure that a big part of what makes Gundam the franchise that it is is rolling this energy into future spinoffs and remakes of the original
