I've been planning to do a playtest of my retroclone, MHR, recently. The plan is to do a Krakoa era game. X-Men '97 has me in a X-Men mood.
I had an intrusive thought and decided to check if audible had X-Men content that I could listen to at work. I can't exactly get away with reading a comic book at my desk, but I can listen to things at work as long as it doesn't impact my work.
I learned two things:
-
They make novel adaptions of comics, which I somehow never heard of in 20 years
-
They made full cast audio drama adaptions of comics! And they're good too!
I've listened to "Days of Future Past" so far from Graphic Audio Productions. It was a pretty good adaptation. I enjoyed the addition of Kitty Pyrde's consciousness being in her future body and being horrified by the darkest timeline. Some parts felt like they were a bit wordy, but it worked otherwise.
I'm currently listening to Astonishing X-Men The Gifted. It is waaay more obvious Whedon wrote this comic listening to in audio form. Like, a lot, lot more obvious. I forgot how many references he made to movies and TV. It's almost like he thought that made him cool or something to know movie stuff.
The company seems to keep actors the same between production. So, Wolverine has the same actor, Cyclops, Kitty, etc. It helps make it easy to follow as you are working.
And, they're pretty inexpensive. With my audible membership, each one was only a little over $7 USD. So, they're not that much more expensive than the comics they're based on.
Kind of a fun find. It looks like they exclusively did big events and they seem to have all been made in 2015. So, I got a strong vibe this didn't make numbers and was quietly canceled. Still, fun find.
