i am already generally speaking not a fan of youtubers whose whole brand is like pointing out some person whos being weird online to point and laugh at, but "tumblr historian" type youtubers who more often than not focus on issues that are either incited by or directly effect marginalized users with an otherwise small internet presence really disgust me in particular.
best case scenario they are doing a deep dive on some actual online bigot or abuser, but they still rarely get to the heart of whats happening and whos being affected. its a freak show to them. they might occasionally express some lukewarm sympathies for the victims but theres never a sense that theyre in community with them. and thats not even getting into the ethics of profiting off of this "historical" work of documenting a persons darkest moments or cringe interpersonal drama for the world to see.
anyway all this to say, strange aeons just answered an ask indicating that shes planning on making a video about the tumblr ceos violent transphobia against a now-banned trans woman user. her replies and comments are full of people telling her that this is a terrible idea, that this is going directly against the wishes of the person being most directly affected here, that theres no way to do this in a way that doesnt direct more hate towards trans women who are already facing increased harassment on and off the site.
if she does go through with this, i want it on public record that she was told that this was a bad fucking idea. i doubt aeons is going to listen to any criticism here because like, her most recent video alone is one of those infinitely popular "wow polycules and queer housing situations are full of freaks!" videos and consists of her just straight up reading other peoples posts/replies set to dramatic music and then at the end going "this obviously fake story is probably all fake but it COULD be real and isnt that so scary!!" like she does not care about her fellow queer people as long as theyre Weird queer people and i fucking shudder to think of how a video of hers about this current situation would portray a kinky trans woman sex worker who is already the victim of sitewide terf pedojacketing. nevertheless! i hope im proven wrong!
tldr im basically writing this so we remember that people, even queer people, who treat community issues as Content can never be acting in solidarity with the lgbtq community as a whole and that their exploitation is never cool or funny. and if strange aeons does put out a video despite the many many people explaining to her why that would be fucked up, she does not get to act like it was an innocent mistake when she gets called out for causing more harm.
