In light of Sonic Prime going live on Netflix today, I wanted to share an old Twitter thread of mine that draws on my long-lost love of writing Sonic fanfic.
(Formatted using cohoard, but not sure why the template I used is acting up, sorry. Will edit to make it more legible.)

Totally useless of me, but the fact that the Sonic movie is back in the news has me thinking about the Sonic movie plot I'd have pitched.
Just stuck on that Sonic's whole thing is being an anti-imperialist resistance fighter. The 90s 'tude is completely secondary to that.
Lunchtime thoughts! In at least a few cases, 90s media was surprisingly ok with explicitly insurgent characters; hell, in Final Fantasy VII you play as actual literal ecoterrorists.
SatAm!Sonic and Archie!Sonic fit right into that, even including story arcs where Sonic causes extensive collateral damage in hit-and-run attacks on Eggman's empire.
That's what I'd love to see on screen again now: something that examines violent resistance to an ever expanding empire.
(BTW, this is why I say that She-Ra can also be understood from the perspective of SatAm!Sonic. The Fright Zone has some great commonality with Robotropolis...)
All this, then, is what leads me to that an ★ideal★ Sonic storyline for 2019 would incorporate some of the best thematic elements from SatAm, the Sonic OVA, and Sonic and the Secret Rings to explicitly explore what it means to actively resist empires.
OK, I can't resist actually putting my fanfic hat back on and trying to outline this shit. (Key word: outline.)
Opening scene: outside major US city, can see Eggman's iconic Egg Mobile coming through what seems to be a rip in the sky, followed by wave after wave of bot, all advancing on a military defense line.
Next up, a few quick battle scenes between Eggman and the military, in which Eggman's bots seem to be beaten back. Cut to rural forest area, where a few of Eggman's bots are busy roboticizing local wildlife. Cut back to clash with military, now overwhelmed by new bots.
Within days, we see Eggman presiding New Robotropolis, built from the ruins of the city that we saw in the first scenes. Similar shots from cities around the world, falling siege to wave after wave of bots. All hope seems to be lost.
Cut to Green Hill Zone, Sonic running breakneck speed as Tails calls in that he found where Eggman opened the portal from. Sonic races off into the distance towards somewhere that looks a lot like Metallic Madness Zone.
After a few shots of Sonic beating the crap out of the few remaining bots with Tails tagging along and giving navigational / tactical advice, they find the portal device and jump in.
Act 2 (heh): Sonic and Tails land in the middle of a heated and rapidly losing battle between a local resistance group and Eggman's army, now bolstered by captured military vehicles as well.
They help out, allowing the resistance to escape just as the next wave comes in. Back at a resistance safehouse, they explain to Sonic just how bad things are; Earth was not prepared for Eggman's roboticization technology, and was completely overrun.
Without missing a beat, Sonic goes racing in, despite Tails' objections and the advice of the local resistance group. Arriving at New Robotropolis, Sonic manages to break through a few waves to get deep into Eggman's new factory.
Things start to turn for the worse, though, with the sheer number of bots and the new technologies captured from Earth militaries. After a few close calls, Sonic is finally captured by Eggman.
During Eggman's monologue, Sonic manages to escape, making his way back out of the factory. A spare glance back shows, however, what Eggman was really up to: scanning Sonic to put the finishing touches on Metal Sonic, who now triumphantly takes to the skies.
After barely outrunning Metal Sonic, Sonic scrapes back to the hideout in defeat, arriving to many told-you-sos.
Planning their next move, Tails ponders how they'd gotten out of similar scrapes before. Wouldn't they normally go for the Chaos Emeralds at this point?
The resistance leader asks what the Chaos Emeralds are, and on learning, tells Tails that they found a glowing stone recently that sounds pretty similar. They then hand Tails the stone.
As he studies it, Tails hypothesizes that Earth must have its own power source that was reawakened when the portal opened... maybe those could work instead?
Act 3: Here's where Sonic learns from Earth. Working with resistance cells all over the world, using local knowledge and tactics, he and Tails are able to locate the remaining 6 MacGuffins --- I mean, Chaos Rubies, I guess?
The next several scenes show Sonic and Tails working with each different group, following their lead to launch surprise attacks and collect all of Earth's MacGuffins.
Using all seven of Earth's Chaos gems, Sonic is able to transform into Earth's version of Super Sonic. Finally, we get the climatic showdown between Super Sonic and Eggman's army, Metal Sonic at the vanguard.
With Super Sonic making one heck of an opening, Tails and the various resistance cells are able to make their way back into the factory and shut down the control center for Eggman's roboticized army.
Seeing he's lost his bid for a new planet, Eggman starts to escape back through the portal, which starts to close behind him.
There's a lot left to do to win back the Earth, but for the first time, it looks achievable, thanks to Sonic taking just a moment to learn a bit first. Cut to a montage of Earth resistance movements winning battles over the few independent bots left behind as credits roll.
