I joined this website when I was really grappling with the fact that I didn't need to be on social media any more (career change) but I still felt compelled to be. Like, a literal compulsion: "opening Twitter on my phone as soon as I unlocked it without any conscience thought" kind of thing.
To be perfectly honest, I kind of just replaced that with cohost at first. But cohost didn't feel bad to be on. It also didn't feel hard to close. It was easy to start and stop, because cohost wasn't built to suck engagement out of my brain and turn it into ad revenue.
It's been heartening to see folks pick up independent RSS blogging and other related things in the wake of the closing announcement. I understand why many people want (or have) to move on to things like Bluesky too.
But c'mon, look at how often I actually posted anything on here, the website I liked. I think I'm just gonna try to turn that old "check the feed" impulse into a "read a book" impulse, at least for a while. That, too, would have been a harder choice to make without resting at cohost along the way.
