Sometimes I think about trying to learn how to cook something, but I don't want to set off the smoke alarm. It's really sensitive. Just pre-heating the oven and then opening it will set it off. I don't want to deal with that.

I have the same overly sensitive smoke detector problem.
I got in the habit of taking my desk fan out and pointing it at the smoke detector while cooking, which is kind of overkill for anything less than filling up the kitchen with smoke.
More recently in covid + wildfire smoke times, I found that running a hepa filter on high had the same effect without recirculating a bunch of stuff I don't want to breathe anyway.
