I live in Portland and sometimes I make video games if I can find somebody who will pay me to do it.

I gave Caves of Qud another try last night. I haven't died yet, but I don't know what to do, because it seems like I'm not strong/equipped enough to fight anything outside of the salt marshes, but I can't find any equipment (or any creatures that have equipment) in the salt marshes. I haven't seen a single snapjaw yet, and I'm running out of water from automatically pouring it on myself while exploring.

I looked at the wiki and they have a checklist of stuff you should have before leaving the salt marshes, but I don't know how to get any of it since I can neither buy it nor find any creatures to loot it from.

I remember when I played several years ago, I somehow made it far enough to get the quest where you have to get 200 feet of wire or whatever, but I have no idea how I managed that now.

Some builds are more difficult than others in the beginning. If you've already exhausted many of your resources, it might be a good idea to start a fresh run since it sounds like you haven't progressed much. It may also be worth considering a more combat-oriented build. Don't be afraid to try out encounters you're not sure of in the early game - you might end up getting a significant item in a tougher fight, and if you lose, you likely didn't lose much. And you learned something!

Make sure you're starting your initial quests in Joppa- What's Eating the Watervine is easier to start off, even if you can't kill much- you should be able to get enough XP if you kill a few glowfish along the way. Take large encounters slowly, and don't forget to use your sprint action to escape if you get in over your head! We all must do what we have to, if we want to survive in Qud.

You'll probably also get enough artifacts to give to Argyve- if you have a, err, pliable sense of honor, you usually can find artifacts in the homes of the vinewafer farmers to get a level up before you even leave the town. They might not notice if you're careful to close their doors behind you.
