• they/them

I live in Portland and sometimes I make video games if I can find somebody who will pay me to do it.

I'm still playing Fire Emblem Engage and it's still frustrating me. They've thrown so many units at me now that I can't possibly use them all, but they all complain when I don't use them enough. Whenever I finish a chapter, I can't decide whether to go straight to the next chapter (because it's probably the easiest thing available) or try to grind out some levels on one of the skirmishes that I'm always underleveled for (even with my good characters, not the ones that need the experience), and then whatever I end up choosing, I can't decide which characters to bring, for similar reasons, so I usually just go with the ones I think I'm most likely to be able to win with, meaning the ones that are already at high levels, so the disparity between them and the low-level ones just gets greater. A lot of the time, I load it up and just spend twenty minutes wandering around the Somniel giving people gifts and stuff because I can't figure out the optimal way forward so I end up giving up and doing nothing.

The most annoying part is that when I'm actually doing the battles, I'm usually having a pretty good time, but at all the parts in between, I'm frustrated by not being able to develop my party the way I want to. This is basically the opposite of how it was in Three Houses, where I looked forward to the stuff between the battles and felt like my characters could still make progress even if I wasn't using them much because I could train them all in between. Engage has an arena where you can give characters a little bit of experience, but you can only do it three times between each battle and it only gives them a tiny bit of experience so it hardly seems worth doing. It's also harder to rank up supports since you can't just eat a bunch of meals with people, but maybe that's just as well because the writing is terrible and the support conversations aren't actually interesting.

Bah!
