Okay Cohost, you get to decide what I watch next (tomorrow), so that I don't waste a full hour looking at my Netflix list without ever picking anything. I don't have any faith in any of these, but I'm at a loss for "good" movies right now. (suggestions welcome ig)

In the meantime, I'll go watch Sonic 2 🌀

Please vote:

xXx Return of Xander Cage
GI Joe Snake Eyes
DUNE
Kong Skull Island
Morbius hehe haha it's morbin time (I might watch the 2023 Power Rangers instead)

Bad time for memory loss to kick in and forget this poll, where a two and a half hour movie could and did win, overwhelmingly. So I stayed up to 4AM to do the deed. I'm going to bed. Love u 💜

Dune Review

★★★

Watched Aug 11, 2023

Dune clearly isn't a home viewing experience and that's okay. Some movies are just meant for theaters. As such, how many hundreds in tech resources you are short will have the impact shrink proportionally. The monochrome scenes accompanied by many layered sounds may get lost in your setup and flatten the whole, rather than enhance.

Still, composition and art direction aren't bound by your wealth. The barren wonder of the world building that's displayed here is the true spectacle of Dune. The whole is beautifully callous, trippy and sporadically even meditative. Along with a strong cast diversity, composed of mostly good performances, the lengthy runtime manages to construct a compelling story. At least, there is goodwill here toward a strong sequel.

Gonna throw in a vote for 2023 Power Rangers. I imagine it's a big 'ol mess, especially with the creators of the show retconning Rita Repulsa's faceturn at the end of Power Rangers in Space.
