With Embracer not doing great, I don't think they'll be taking big risks for a while. Developer Volition's plucky role-playing series, Summoner , will probably never return at this point.
There's just something about this very specific turn-of-the-century weirdness that we've lost along the way. This era of PS2 rewired my brain in a way I don't think we'll ever recapture.

RIP Volition. This one hurts, man. I hate being right, most days.

Yeah, can't blame you. It is VERY specific in a way I've been thinking about a lot lately :) Fire it up a few more times; I really like it. If you don't dig it, this one (the sequel) is a lot more action-oriented and lot less old CRPG.

mm. not that i dislike CRPGs, i just haven't found S1's combat / character building gameplay interesting yet.

after trying OG on PS2 (runs like crap) i looked up some sequel footage also and noted that it might be a pretty solid 60fps? however, i got the impression that the wide-open environments of the first game had turned into relatively tiny rooms and hallways. is that fairly accurate or just a mistaken impression?

It's been way too long that I remember that specifically, but it sounds pretty right. It IS a pretty different game, but it felt big at the time. I would definitely not remember how it runs, because the first still runs perfectly in my mind, even if I know it's probably 17fps.
