My New Year's resolution is to be even more dull, so I've started a letterboxd.

My first choice was not a winner. I have embarrassing taste, even in movies.

Enola Holmes Review

The target audience for this film is a pinhole; old enough to be interested in a grounded political angle, but young enough to find the direct Dora the Explorer references amusing. Remember when in SLC Punk, the lead addresses the audience before each act, to give them context and make you seem like a lifelong friend that's in the room? Enola, instead, addresses you constantly, to the point of literally asking: "Do you have any ideas?" You, the viewer, are the room. You're expected to yell back the location of ye olde Swiper at the screen.

So, in short, this is an insufferable piece. At best, still, there is a charming coming of age adventure, with a hearty theme of self-empowerment that will hopefully resonate with younger viewers, looking to casually rebel. There is a message in its defiance and it is that you can chart your own course, even when surrounded by the shadows of powerful figures.

It could've gone down smoother without resorting to be Downton Abbey's Office.
