i regret that i can no longer find another trailer for it on YouTube that had a demonic cake screaming the memorable and accurate line "CAKE FROM HELL!"
creator Shinya Nishagaki sounded like a really cool person.
That was an interesting article, thank you. In return, I found that trailer for you. It's awful quality, but it's on archive.org. LOT going on in that trailer ngl
oh wow, ha! thanks! strangely, the delivery is totally different than i recall.
btw, you could always emulate it!
I find that people's enjoyment of Illbleed reflects their expectation going into the game. If you go into the game understanding that it is essentially a haunted house simulator, that is what the game gives you. If you go into it thinking it is a survival horror game in the vein of Resident Evil, this game doesn't do much to deliver on that.
I would typically see people complaining about the combat, when fighting is supposed to be an absolute last resort - you are supposed to do everything possible to avoid fighting in the majority of the scenarios and your best "combat tools" are in a dodge move and activating an exit to the fight (and using an exploit in toggling the map to temporarily "deactivate" some of the enemies that roam the stages if you are so inclined). The common theme behind these tools is "not fighting."
Having an instruction booklet helps playing this game as well, as when I watch people play this as a first playthrough on Twitch, they tend to completely miss the concept of the horror monitor. This is an item that is typically hidden in the beginning of each stage that is essential to playing the game.
Regardless, I wouldn't call Illbleed an amazing 10/10 game mechanically, but like it or hate it, the game absolutely delivers an experience you'll likely never forget once the pieces fall into place for you. Hopefully you'll be able to come across a chance to play the game at some point. At least then you can come to your own conclusion.
The loss (or at least abstraction) of manuals in games was really a huge downturn. One of many reasons I'm not that fond of emulation. In this case, I'd also want to know what a VMU is telling me, even if it tells me nothing most of the time.
