More unrelatable FM Towns exclusives with Abel: Shin Mokushiroku Taisen. Appearing in 1995, this Japanese role-playing game follows the aesthetics of peers like Phantasy Star or Ys. The futuristic setting is in the 21st century, after climate change has destroyed the Earth, to the point of a bestial invasion. While it is pretty standard fare, it does have a few banging in-game tracks 👌

As the FM Towns focused on providing tools, it's no surprise that it also offered homebrew software, such as Shooting Towns, which is like RPG Maker but for shoot 'em ups.

From the hundreds of creations, a compilation called Excellent 10 published the best ones. System AICA, which stands for Armed Industral Cybernetic Autobot, is one of those examples, where you operate a transforming girl. It's a whole vibe✨

I just learned of the existence of the FM Towns system, a Japan-only personal computer line with a dedicated portion to video games. And I'm going to make this thing, whose abbreviation stands for "Fujitsu Micro," everyone's problem now. Through the PC's multiple iterations, it would also launch a game console version, despite finding success in Japanese offices.

Mostly, the machine seems to have been a place for arcade ports, but it has a few exclusives here or there. Aside from a line of wild commercials, I think my favorite bit so far is this piece of quintessential 90s tech:

I'm sorry, I'm a complete failure 😔

I only noticed just now that the music for that commercial is made by the same people who did the Dragon's Dogma classic banger, "Into Free"
