it's a common misunderstanding that the first byte error is a problem with the varnish cache server. the varnish cache server is working fine. what's happening is that eggbug (
) and the Host (
) are running around the server room spraying Halon fire extinguishers on servers hosting the database and page rendering engines, and until those are no longer on fire, they slow down significantly and the Varnish server doesn't get anything to cache for others
