Out of interest, are you creating the ASCII interpretations digitally and then creating the oil painting based on that?
Yeah, that's basically the process. I use a program called Playscii which can convert images into ascii art. For this series of paintings I converted a bunch of old WPA posters advertising national parks. Typically I'll make a bunch of conversions with different character sets and colors till I find something I like and then paint it.
