I post a write-up of a TTRPG I personally enjoy every week, pitching why you should play it over 5e

Set in a world where mankind has long taken to the stars and achieved true communism, Lancer is a game about piloting big fucking mechs and saving people, be it for profit, for honour, or for the goodness of your heart. Lancer is $25, but people who wish only to see the player side content can get a player's handbook entirely for free. Lancer was the first post in the tumblr blog for good reason, its the perfect game for people attempting to try new things beyond 5e, having a complex and interesting ruleset and a strange yet engaging setting.

Union's third committee is indeed founded on utopian pillars, committed to ensuring nobody lacks for anything. But if that were the whole story, why would you be fighting deadly mech battles?

It's the places where utopian intent meets reality's limitations where your missions and the interesting gameplay and story play out.

  • The second committee was an imperialist fascist project, and the galaxy the third committee has inherited was shaped by that aggressive colonization. Many worlds distrust Union for good reason. Fighting seccom remnants or local imitators is one mission theme.
  • the fringe of human space is controlled by corpro-states, not directly by Union. Their commitment to the utopian pillars is sometimes only lip service for the sake of not angering Union. Resistance groups formed against them on frontier worlds fight because sometimes even that lip service disappears. Mercenaries are hired to put down such rebellion, but sometimes the Lancers decide the underdog is more worthy and turn on their employers.
  • besides the resources extracted from the frontier by corpro-states, Union also quietly runs on the (arguably) enslaved labor of NHPs, non human persons. These beings present like AI constructs mostly, but in fact are n-dimensional minds existing in and capable of manipulating nonreal paracausal space. When one enters a fractal cascade and breaks the programs literally called shackles used to control them into human time and subjectivity, it can potentially carve out its own Madoka Magica witch's labyrinth, a Metavault, and turn into a godlike Eidolon. At that point it's them or you, because rapidly their pursuits become damaging or deadly to nearby humans, and their perspectives don't even consider humans for a moment.
  • The 3 worlds of the nation of Karrakis are known as the Karrakin Trade Baronies, which might give you some clue that they never fully capitulated their sovereignty nor adopted Union's system. Between duels of honor and the clone slave revolt on the under-terraforming third world in the system, plenty of conflict arises here.
  • Never ask an NHP the true name of RA, a member of the New Humanity Front what they were doing during the second committee, or Harrison Armory about the Hercynian crisis event.
  • there's a whole other swathe of inhabited human worlds known as the Aunic peoples. They get psychic powers from their very own godlike paracausal entity. The second committee was scared of them so they launched a nearlight automated planet killing spike at the Aun homeworld called PISTON-1. It's still in transit. We made a mistake. It's possible they will come for us.

Because I love Lancer, I felt the need to add this color to my share of this description. "Achieved true communism" really doesn't do justice to the breadth of the setting, which provides ample opportunities for both sides of a conflict to be right and wrong in a complicated mix.

Yep!!! sorry i had to sum it up in few words so i couldn't too into how much i fucking love the setting, Lancer has issues in implementing its setting in gameplay but the setting itself is not the problem

Thaumcrash! A rules and math heavy game entirely focused around customization, every character build ends up feeling flavorful and valid, and while it might seem daunting, the devs have worked very hard to cut down on stuff that's too difficult to remember. Everything your character would need to know is entirely in their sheet. The setting is incomplete, but actively being fleshed out, and made with mechanics in mind, they've tried their best to make it so that RAW, if you think a character should be able to do something, they're able to

  • Paraphrased testimonial from the dev

(Mod Azzy: I really like this game, its entirely not my thing, but I can very honestly say that its a game that had a lot of thought and love put into its design, I also adore the setting, it feels very interesting, and clearly made with the mechanics in mind, which is an issue a lot of first time devs struggle with)

Due to... recent events that I would rather not talk about, today's post is a highlight of different tabletop games made by trans peeps! These games are fantastic in their own right, of course, but you can also know that they were made by incredibly cool and attractive people

(Also, these are flyover descs of the game, they'll get more in-depth singular posts later, this is because I am lazy)

Perfect Draw is a phenomenal card game TTRPG that was funded in less than a day on backerkit, it's incredibly fun and has simple to learn hard to master rules for creating custom cards, go check it out!

Songs for the dusk is fucking good, pardon my language, but it's a damn good post apocalyptic game about building community in a post-capitalist-post-apocalypse-post-whatever world. do yourself a favor and if you only check out one game in this list, check this one out, its a beautiful game.

Flying Circus is set in a WW1 inspired fantasy setting full of witches, weird eldritch fish people (who are chill as hell), cults, dead nobility, and other such things. It's inspired by Porco Rosso primarily but it has other touchstones.

Wanderhome is a game about being cute little guys going on a silly adventure and growing as the seasons change, its GMless and very fun

https://weregazelle.itch.io/armour-astir
Armour Astir has been featured in here before but its so damn good I had to post it twice. AA demonstrates a fundamental knowledge of the themes of mech shows in a way that very few other games show, its awesome

Kitchen Knightmares is... more of a LARP but its still really dang cool, its about being a knight serving people in a restaurant, its played using discord so its incredibly accessible

https://grimogre.itch.io/michtim
Michtim is a game about being small critters protecting their forest from nasty people who wish to harm it, not via brutal violence (sadly) but via friendship and understanding (which is a good substitute to violence)

ok this technically doesn't count but I'm putting it here anyways cuz its like one of my favorite ttrpgs of all time
TSL is a game about baring your heart and dueling away with people who you'll probably kiss 10 minutes later, its very very fanfic-ey and inspired by queer narratives. I put it here because its made by a team, and the expansion has a setting specifically meant to be a trans "allegory", so I'll say it counts, honestly just go check it out its good shit

Mystic Lillies is a game inspired by ZUN's Touhou Project about witches dueling powerful foes, each other, and themselves. Mystic Lillies features rapid character creation and a unique diceless form of rolling which instead uses a standard playing card deck.

I... want to do a more general overview on Jenna K as an important figure in indie RPG design, but for now just know that Nobilis is good

https://temporalhiccup.itch.io/apocalypse-keys
Apocalypse Keys is a game inspired by Doom Patrol, Hellboy, X-men, and other comics about monstrousness being an allegory for disenfranchisement. Apocalypse Keys is also here because its published by Evilhat so its very cleaned up and fancy but I love how the second you check out the dev's other stuff you can tell they are a lot more experimental with their stuff, this is not a critique, it is in fact a compliment

Fellowship! I've posted about this game before, but it is again here. Fellowship has a fun concept that it uses very well mostly, its a game about defining your character's culture, and I think that's really really cool

https://ufo-mina.itch.io/voidheart-symphony
Voidhearts symphony was yesterday's game, this might sound like a cop-out but just go look for the description there

this probably doesn't count but Kamigakari si really good, its translator is trans which is why its here, its fun and suited for shorter games, so I think its worth a shot

Panic at the Dojo is a phenomenal ttrpg based on what the Brazilian would call "Pancadaria", which basically means, fucking other's people shit up. Character Creation is incredibly open and free, meaning that many character concepts are available

Legacy 2e is a game about controlling an entire faction's choices across time, its very fun
