Generally, I am against the trend of bigger game companies releasing absurd narrative-heavy games on April Fools. I think it pollutes the mainstream concept of what narrative games can be by saying forthright: "this dating sim is a joke, have it for free." I think it's bad that this trend perpetuates this idea that if a game's primary focus is reading, it is worth less or even worth nothing.

But in the same breath, I want to be happy that there's any space at all in this niche for A.) Big companies to treat their characters and fiction with reckless, playful abandon, and B.) Small teams or freelancers to get paid to make such unusual games.

There's an argument that, Sega "surprising" their audience by shrieking "SONIC IS DEAD, WHAT HAPPENED? FIND OUT FOR FREE!" for all of 24 hours will bring in a portion of folks who would never interact with a narrative-heavy detective adventure game otherwise. I have little interest in playing it myself, but I imagine the number of Sonic Murder Game players who will go on to purchase another similar detective adventure game is greater than zero. But that group of players is leagues smaller than the digital passersby that see that kind of game costing $0.00 and walk on by.

The optimist in me wants to see the positive side of games like this being approachable and delighting unsuspecting players. The pessimist in me feels like the endeavor pollutes the craft of game writing.

i haven't played it yet, but i think it's at least worth it because of how much joy i've seen in the reviews over the writing of the characters. love it when sonic fans get their favorite characters to talk in the way they imagine them talking

I played it and really enjoyed it and I've played all of one sonic game (iirc, the first, in which I never got past the first level or two), but I have played a bunch of VNs and stuff before. This was a short one compared to the others I've played - just a couple hours long. (Oops I accidently hit submit early again)

As far as I'm concerned, a short fun free VN set in a popular franchise can only help lead more people to try other VNs, people who maybe hadn't realized VNs existed or that they might enjoy them.

one of the biggest ways the "joke VN spinoff" can be such a bummer is as this sudden Big Gulp of narrative engagement with a world and characters that fans were clearly thirsty for in a franchise that doesn't normally serve them particularly well in that regard (by virtue of being about platforming or fighting etc). like, if your characters are popular enough to have an entire comic book series and multiple cartoons, you are probably fucking up by not having a narrative-heavy (eg VN or other similar genres) spinoff game series. iunno certainly not everything needs to be A Big Franchise but at the point that something already is, might as well creatively explore the full territory instead of being bound to whatever arbitrary DNA it started with in the 1990s.
