here's some music that i like

Goldfish - Three Second Memory (2013)
Goldfish is a really interesting act out of South Africa. They play parties. Ibiza and wherever the hell else. The vibe they put out on their first three albums (Perceptions of Pacha, Caught in the Loop, Get Busy Living) is very much a "trashed on the lawn" kinda thing but Three Second Memory plays a funny trick where it does that for two and a half songs and then gets weirdly melancholy for the rest of the album, even when it's superficially pretending not to be.
"Choose Your Own Adventure" / "He's Crazy" are an excellent duo and a high point of the album, but what's really stuck in my head all these years is track 9, "Trees and Jets". They have a great talent for composing interesting emotional journeys and choosing amazing collaborators, but I guess people didn't love Three Second Memory as much as their previous albums, so after this they course-corrected to putting out more club-oriented material.

One day you wake up, everything is burning
Even though you toed the line

Candy Claws - Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time (2013)
If you've hung around me for long you've probably heard me talk about this, so I'll definitely be repeating myself a bit here. This dream-pop piece conjures up towering edifices of rock and salt and seafoam; it is crunchy. It is about two beings at the beginning of time watching the world become. I really, really love this album. It's the kind of thing that you listen to lying down in the sun with the wind tickling your face. It'll transport you through time. How special it is! It also reminds me of a moment in my life when I was being exposed to a lot of new and interesting music all the time through the what.cd staff recommendations. I miss the tastemakers!

I would miss so much of the world (much of the world)
Without the way and all you see

Genesis Owusu - Smiling With No Teeth (2021)
Holy shit this guy puts on a good show. I saw him on the same weekend that I saw Florence + the Machine and Genesis Owusu's set is by far the one that lives rent-free in my head. He performs—among other things—as the "Black Dog", an animalistic, personified representation of depression, in a set that's stylistically diverse but above all fucking loud. I cannot emphasize enough charismatic he is on stage. Man. What a brilliant artist. The rest of the world is just beginning to discover him and I see him absolutely blowing up. also, Kirin J Callinan is his guitarist.

All my friends are hurting, but we dance it off, laugh it off
Scars inside our shoes but we just tap it off, clap it off
Watch me coat in rainbow as I fade into the black, and see
I switched myself to plastic, don't know how to change it back
I'm being eaten on the inside, at least I look like a snack
I haven't come out of my shell but don't know how long 'til I crack, ooh
