reading Umineko has given me a LOT of thoughts but among other things it's made me more excited to create/consume work that is just... confident in being For Adults? like, I love horror in general but I really like a work that's able to move between horror and other modes without feeling like it's either trying way too hard to be edgy or treating the horror with kid gloves in an attempt to remain palatable to The Children

i love how confident Umineko is in it's own conceits, and that you'll understand them as well. like it's one of the few things that expects the audience to do the basic literary analysis needed to actually understand the story and says "well if you can't do it you're in the wrong place"

ryukishi is one of the greatest to ever do it for REAL. i finished umi last year and am currently watching over several friends' shoulders while they read it now. it's really just remarkable how he constructs this full, confident Thought and trusts you, the reader, to be part of the experience of trusting and discovering what that thought is. without love it cannot be seen!!!
