Superbad Review

the 2000s were an entire different era of human existence. it's weird to watch this in relatively close proximity to Mean Girls (2024), which is another movie about high school but it's about the high school experience of (approximately) 2024.

Superbad is a movie about the late 2000s, which was roughly the same time period that I was in high school. At the time, I remember thinking all these characters were just like me and my friends, who were super cool and funny.

In rewatch they are... they are certainly characters made for a comedy of the late 2000s! I won't pretend that some of the jokes didn't still hit for me. I think the scene of Michael Cera forced to sing a crooner song for a group of drunk college students is still fucking hilarious. I love to see Michael Cera put in situations.

Other stuff doesn't really work, for either offensiveness reasons or just... idk, dated reasons? It's weird to watch a movie where Friendly Cops are such a major part of the plot. that's weird, even if I do enjoy watching Seth Rogen and Bill Hader fuckin around.

It really does feel like a movie from a different era though. Like not only the world that it's depicting but the genre of film itself -- you just don't get a lot of Big Budget comedies anymore. So in that sense it was pretty fun to revisit, I suppose.
