i remember back when we called "toolbars with nondescript icons you had to hover over to figure out what they did" mystery meat

while i'm complaining about everything, why is every modern app completely devoid of contrast. you know what makes a tooltip stand out on a gray background? a gray background. nevermind that if you slightly expanded the navbar you could just fit the text in there, not needing useless icons; or you could even align them along the top, since the left nav menu is effectively just another set of tab navigation.

edit: shoutouts to the tab navigation at the top completely forgetting what tab navigation is supposed to look like

Remember when we had standard UI concepts embodied by common controls that could be used predictably and had meanings behind them? Back before every application was really a fucking webpage in disguise, where everyone became free to just go nuts with their bad taste in design?

I miss those days.

EDIT: Also remember when the user actually had control over their color theme and properly-implemented applications would respond accordingly, because that was handled by the system UI theming engine? And this was hugely important and helpful for accessibility?
