"I need you to become a girl."
Those were the first words my father said to me after returning home for the first time in a decade. Aunt Isabelle left us alone. He sipped his tomato soup with a silver spoon and I ate a baguette. The ceiling fan sang its blues.
"After breakfast, we'll go straight to the Gender Closet."
The sun refracted the light from my father's glasses. He was serious.
This all happened because my twin sister, Adelaide, had run away from her duties. The family didn't know why, nor did we really care. However, the general public and the Valkryies she led were unaware of her disappearance for days.
I realized something was up when the media started reporting that the Valkyries were slow to respond to the Gorgians. By the time they arrived, many people had been kidnapped or zapped to death.
I knew that my days with Aunt Isabelle were numbered. I stopped going to school and instead followed her to the theater.
She once asked me why I didn't study for my exams during an intermission break, and I told her, "I don't think it's going to matter."
"You're probably right. The world is ending after all."
The Gender Closet was located deep underground, underneath the Ministry of Family building. It was a metal closet, devoid of any decoration or life. However, as soon as someone entered the closet, their body would transform to fit any clothes they chose to wear.
"We don't have time," my father said as he handed me several feminine articles of clothing, "the Valkyries need you, Adelaide."
When I put on the clothes in the closet and looked at myself in the mirror, I saw that I'd become Adelaide. No, I was Adelaide.
I darted out of the closet, and out the corner of my eye I saw my father salute me.
When I arrived at the scene, the other Valkyries were fighting the aliens.
"What took you so long?!"
A screen of a girl appeared on the right side of my visor. She had red hair and freckles.
More voices came through the static:
"Commander Adelaide, we need your orders!"
"The humans are being taken away!"
"We're being overrun!"
I cleared my throat and broke into a big smile.
"Sorry, everyone! I had an oopsie #depression week, and I needed a tweeny bit of time off!!! Self-care is important, ehehe!"
The Valkyries' faces were tense until they heard my voice and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Kyaaa," I said as I waved my pink MegaJustice MK III Wand at a horde of aliens charging at me, "pururu! Justice Disappear!"
A purple beam materialized from my wand and destroyed the horde. But there were more. I raised my wand once more,
"Don't overdo it, Commander!"
The red-haired girl grabbed my shoulder and hugged me. She was in tears.
"I missed you so much," she said, "everyone did!"
The other girls on the screen wiped away their tears and agreed.
"Don't ever disappear on us again!"
It took me a few seconds to process this, but I nodded.
I'm their Adelaide now. They can do whatever they want with me because I'm her now. I am now Adelaide, war hero and the most beautiful magical girl in the whole universe.
"Okie-dokie, let's spank some aliens!!!111"
