Executive summary because I accidentally wrote a wall of text: I'm going to be posting old computer trivia questions ~daily, follow me if that sounds interesting
So, I have this trivia game. It's called King Chip, it's about the computer industry, it's from nineteen eighty-five, and it boldly claims to be "a game that demystifies computers and technology" in which "computer novices can compete with industry professionals".
It has over four thousand questions and today, almost forty human years later, the majority of them are wildly obscure.
I own copy #08249! It has never been played; the plastic bits are still on the sprue.
A while ago, I started scanning the cards. Ultimately I want to post them to the Internet Archive for, well, archiving. But also, I want to share them with people! I want to see if anyone actually knows this stuff! (answer: you don't. There's a good chance you know some of it, and some of it is actually stuff that's become less obscure over time, but a lot of it is just...very niche historical knowledge.)
To share them, I made plans to start a gimmick account over on the bird site. It's all set up! It starts posting on Monday. Feels kind of like setting off for a long-awaited cruise on the RMS Titanic, y'know?
So I'm going to try doing it here too. As far as I know, there's no API available and no scheduled posts, so posting will be a bit erratic. There's a nice predictable schedule in The Other Place (at least as long as scheduled posts keep working), and I'll try to vaguely match that here, but a lot of it will come down to my personal schedule. Maybe we'll get some sneak peeks here!
I'll post the questions first, and the answers later.
Anyway if you think "vintage computer industry trivia" sounds at all interesting, give this page a follow, maybe? 🥺🙏
