let us go out this evening for pleasure, the night is still young.

don't get me wrong, i love the steam deck and i think it's one of the coolest things in games right now. hell, other than a brief stint with live a live on switch it's the only thing i've been playing games on. that said, when stuff breaks on it because of the proton compatibility layer some wild shit happens.

i've been re-playing the games in the yakuza series on it (yay portable yakuza!) and most of them work great! yakuza 0-3 are all basically flawless, yakuza 4 is technically considered unplayable but i think it's because there's one minigame (puyo puyo?) that crashes the game. otherwise it works great.

but yakuza 5. oh boy yakuza 5.

so i have no idea what is causing this, but in-engine cutscenes will often play the wrong audio. the fmv cutscenes work so it's not a codec issue. everything else in the game works great. but once you initiate an extended story sequence (that isn't dialog boxes) you'll often (though not always) get completely different audio than what should be playing. second sequence in the game i got audio from a scene from the very end of haruka's chapter - daigo's trying to talk a masked kiryu in a cab but all that plays is audio of a crowd cheering and haruka giving them a heartfelt speech in a scene that's like halfway through the game.

it's kind of bonkers? i do hope they fix them all at some point so they're all just verified and working fine but i also love how janky proton is sometimes. just a reminder that none of these games have any earthly business working on linux.
