Reddit's site culture kind of sucks, but it really is second to none as a site where people gather about individual topics. There's a reason that googling "[search term] reddit" became a meme. You could get reasonable human to human interaction about virtually any topic, without the hassle of signing up for some random forum.
But as they're gearing up for their IPO, they've become greedy and controlling in increasingly untenable ways. They're killing 3rd party apps by jacking up the prices of API calls to absurd levels, and have demonstrated their hostility to app developers by lies that the developer of Apollo documents extensively here. Basically they want total control over how users view the site, the better to serve ads and do algorithm manipulation.
And of course they're coming for adult content, because god forbid anywhere on the internet not be a perfectly sanitized shopping mall.
The same stupid corporate shit as ever, basically.
And there's not really a good competitor for this kind of site any more. Cohost is great but it's more general purpose, and focused on original content. I'm sure something new will spring up as Reddit collapses, but I'll still mourn the loss.
