"Restrictions on leaving" usually only apply to military-aged men (or other people who could be drafted). In practice though, there's the following problems:

  • Borders. The russian passport and Fortress Europe policies mean you have to jump through a lot of hoops to go to Europe at all, much less get a work visa or asylum.
  • Money. There's currency conversion restrictions still in place, coupled with VISA/MasterCard pulling out, so you can't buy airplane tickets
  • Lack of air travel. The only air routes to EU countries available are through stopovers with Armenia/Georgia/Kazakhstan, and you can't buy those tickets in a package - see the money issues above, as well as ticket services switching off their routes with Russia entirely.

this is assuming you don't have family still left in your country that you can't leave behind, AND you're eligible for visa/asylum, AND you have money

no official restrictions - yet, at the very least - but:

  • i'm poor
  • i can't seem to find a job over the border - no wonder with my piss-poor credentials, i guess
  • i'm still too scared to try to seek refuge, it still seems like a step into oblivion, especially since i can't leave my wife behind

Maybe im just too pea-brained, but finding a way out of here feels like an insurmountable obstacle to me

ah! understood, that's a lot of difficulties to overcome. really sorry to hear that :( wishing you the best, I hope the political situation gets better for trans people over there soon, or you can find some way out somehow
