sometime in the late 2010s we began to see the phenomenon of people buying new "serious" video cameras and not understanding that film log is supposed to be reversed during editing and it's never not funny

edit: example above from this video. first pic is frame as uploaded, second is passed through film log LUT. probably the wrong one, since every camera does it differently, but you can still tell that #2 and #4 are what was intended

you could argue, "muted tones and low contrast are a valid aesthetic decision" - ah yes! you're right! i assure you the people making the video did not know that

It's also known as log profile. Basically, it allows the camera to save more details in shadows and highlights that are great for someone who plans to edit the video later (more flexibility in getting the colors you want rather than going with what the camera does by default), but the video looks really muted until that editing process happens.

Like I said, I didn't use the right profiles, so it's not accurate, and this is also coming from a compressed low bitrate MP4. The point is that the starting images are definitely in film log, and even if you want a low contrast result, you're gonna convert out of that and then color grade it. These were definitely just left as they came out of the camera, and I doubt it was a truly intentional decision.
