Where you're just in a place? You know like you just go around a zone and it's pretty detailed and there's some interactions and such? Sometimes these get called Walking Simulators but to me that label tends to evoke the feeling of like, a sad guy listening to audio-logs in a forest. I'm talking about games that are functionally like adventure games but foreground silly little interactions over puzzling?

Like Co-open, The Endless Express, Hidden Fragmentation, Sludge Life and such.

Anyway I'm looking for recommendations because I really like these games but I feel like 80% of that space is horror games at the moment (which I have nothing against but it's not what I'm looking for).

might not quite be what you're lookin for, given it's more of a momentum platformer; but the lack of any real "fail" state and the ability to reverse time at one's leisure help it slot into that nice low-stakes vibe for me:

Zineth [Spring, 2012], by Arcane Kids (https://zinethgame-blog.tumblr.com/)

it's a wide-open open-world exploration thing, with the single objective of "skating your way to the moon". main draw is just figuring out pathing across the abstract rooftops of buildings, grinding and wallsliding in order to get Higher, with tons of weird little nooks and crannies to explore. There are a good amount of NPCs, but dialogue is sparse & interactions are kinda limited to challenging em in a little minigame "vs. mode" battle thingy, taking place entirely within a tamagotchi-like app you've got on your phone/menu UI

gamejolt link's dead so mediafire's the only place you can really download it anymore, but it's still worth giving a try imo! (and best played with a controller, but not required iirc)

It's not exactly like the type of game I was referring to but I'm really glad for you to bring it up because I LOVE Zineth, I think it 's so cool. And yeah, there's something about that form I really like- like how it's got this high ceiling for skill but you can also kind of just potter around the place.

Morels The Hunt technically has points and so forth, but they barely matter, I just like it as an excuse to walk among trees, although that might be a bit too little to see for what you're thinking of: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1156590/Morels_The_Hunt/

Crypt Worlds comes to mind, and apparently its sequel just came out, although I haven't tried it yet: https://lilithzone.itch.io/crypt-underworld

do the Frog Detective games count, or are they TOO narrative?

Broken Reality borders on ironic or gamey at times, but I still really vibed: https://store.steampowered.com/app/757480/Broken_Reality/

Electric Highways is purely just finding your way around with no interactions (as far as I remember?) but bonus points for being in a genuinely old engine: https://zykoveddy.itch.io/electric-highways

A Mall Near You is kinda like Co-Open but in a slightly fantastical version of depressing capitalist reality: https://dieselrave.itch.io/a-mall-near-you

Cosmic Commute is almost too (literally) linear to count, but the characters are still fun at least: https://billy-dent.itch.io/space-mykee-officer

Wrong Box is more of a series of self-contained vignettes but it's still neat: https://mollysoda.itch.io/wrong-box

Party Darling is a little less explore-y and more game-y but it might still scratch this itch: https://sweetheartsquad.itch.io/party-darling

Payroll is interesting because it explores a fairly small space, but changing over time: https://astrojone.itch.io/payroll

adventure games but foreground silly little interactions over puzzling

a couple times i've tried my mod mr. friendly with levels i've never actually played "normally" ie as normal Doom combat experiences, and it was an interesting feeling exploring a space for the first time in "chill out, screw around, talk to folks" mode.
