from what I've heard and remember, there were a lot of fansub groups up to the late 2000's. In the 2010's Netflix and other streaming services led to a lot of fansub groups dwindling down
now (2020's) we're in a situation where the machine translated (or AI translated) "official" subs are so bad that the fansub groups are slowly forming back up again
