i was browsing the feed™ on my phone and there was an interesting article from USA Today about Florida's book bans and bookstores. i was on my phone at the time, a Google® Pixel 7© Pro™, for which i still do not have an adblock solution. the vanilla experience.

the page is full of ads, of course, including a video ad that auto-plays, i pause, and then automatically restarts when i start scrolling the page.

the thing is, though, i use Google® Fi™. i have """"""unlimited data""""""; it just costs $10 per gigabyte.

this page — this single story page — ate 16.4 MB. one page. one article.

this single page view cost me $0.16.

it cost me a non-trivial amount just to view this page. if i was to, say, read 5 articles a day — you know, maybe two pages of a physical newspaper — i would be paying nearly $25, more than the total cost of my plan before data.

and it's not just one webpage, it's every webpage. everything is like this. everything is this shitty. and to interact with the world at all is to have to immerse yourself in it. it fucking sucks!

oh, and because of course it is, this was also one of those funny webpages that hijacks your back button. "please don't go yet, read these other clickbait articles!" eat my entire fucking ass.

in reply to @xkeeper's post:

i use a mix of firefox and kiwi browser on android (another of the chromium prodigy, but it lets you use all normal desktop chrome addons on mobile), but i've never tried migrating data from chrome to it so no idea if it'd be any use if in the process of unsticking you're just going to firefox instead

It's actually really easy to export those things! I forget if Firefox does it, but some web browsers will just automatically grab those things from other web browsers when you sign up too. If you'd like, I can write out instructions on how to transfer everything. It should take maybe 5-10 minutes to transfer stuff at most. Though, I should say, I only know how to do it on a computer. Not sure how to transfer stuff on a phone

this is a big part of why I just... don't like "consuming content" on my phone. I'll avoid it if it is at all possible, because this is a horrible experience, and it's expensive, and it's slow, and it drains the hell out of your battery...

they only have 5 online and they try to push 6

when i had 4 on my previous phone i constantly had problems with what i assume was it getting oom killed and dropping connections. idk what the problem was

Oooh, yeah I had the same issues on one of my older phones. Seems to be less of a problem with my Pixel 7 Pro, though! I've only had it drop maybe once every couple of months? I do have the Always On VPN enabled for it, but I don't know if that actually does anything to keep it in memory (not that it's been big problem so far). With that setting enabled Android still generates a "VPN dropped" notification every time I switch from Wifi to 4/5G, but it actually works fine and the notification disappears on its own. And you can just silence that notification so it never shows up. Heck, maybe you don't even get that notification if you don't have "Always On VPN" enabled, I haven't checked.

They've still got the blokada 4 APK on Github, actually!

I think it's worth a shot if you haven't tried it on the Pixel 7 Pro, but totally understand if you don't want to bother.

it's certainly not the best solution but adguard for android is decent at adblocking. not quite on the level of ublock, but pretty good, and has a userscript manager built-in which is cool. it is paid though, but you can get around that pretty easily

I use firefox on my android, and I take it a step further than uBlock by running NoScript - I have to manually whitelist every server that wants to run javascript.

This is nice, because the ad-server is almost always a different server than the content server. This is bad because some websites are just permanantly fucked and I need to use Chrome anyways if I want them to work at all.

I am inventing work for myself because I am stubborn, and this is no way to be forced to live.
