The AFT convention is currently ongoing and one very noteworthy development from this week: it has overwhelmingly passed a resolution supporting the UAW call for a general strike on May 1, 2028. I believe this makes it the first union to commit to doing so. This now means up to 2.1 million workers (about 400,000 in the UAW and 1.7 million in AFT) could eventually go on strike that day—although obviously not all contracts will eventually align with that date.
Full resolution below the cut:
Per C. M. Lewis over on Twitter, there are actually a few other unions and locals who have aligned with this call over the summer besides AFT. It appears the list is currently the American Postal Workers Union and the Washington AFL-CIO (aka the Washington State Labor Council); the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO is also apparently mulling a similar resolution.
If you'd like your local or union to align with these calls, there's also a resource page for that: Bargaintogether.org. I would strongly encourage you to, if at all possible, push for this contract alignment within your union. The page also has a template resolution you can jack for introducing (or adapting) in your local union.
