it is genuinely funny to me how they got Jack as essentially the startup eqivelant of "executive producer who does nothing but has their name on the credits" as an advertisment to point and say "look we got the founder of twitter on board with us" only for him to be an idiot and now actively doing the opposite thing, warding people away from the site

anyway i like cohost, i also like bluesky, frankly they're Very Different Websites that I use for different things that aren't interchangable with each other, Cohost just simply doesnt have the captial - financial or social - to draw in as many people and that's OK

@derek

I just saw this and it seems relevant. But also i think bsky is fine, the closest to a viable twitter replacement ive seen. Jack is of course a dumbass. Also we will see what happens to bsky when the vc faucet dries up and they need revenue, but should be fun till the

in reply to @spookybiscuits's post:

he doesn't write code but he created the spinout as CEO of twitter, is a member of their board of executives, and has provided all of their operating funding to date, through twitter stock that he liquidated.

np! to be fair, in practice I think they're unlikely to do this for the same reason elon is unlikely to do this (because it would get them banned from cell phone app stores), and bluesky both needs to attract new users and has an external developer community which isn't beholden to bluesky PBLLC itself in a way that twitter does not

however the fact that jack sees eye to eye with elon on this (and many other things) is part of why I will never trust bsky as a product.

Oh, I see. I guess in my mind I always saw an unbroken link between Dorsey and Musk in terms of being bad management, so I assumed everyone would go to a place like Mastodon or something. Thanks for clarifying!

He’s a free speech absolutist, he absolutely thinks blocking people on a website is some form of actual evil. Like Bluesky didn’t even have blocking until users demanded it, and he has publicly supported un-banning Donald Trump from Twitter. On the other hand he’s not a complete idiot, so when everyone else under him who makes the website work says “actually, this is necessary to make the website work” he just goes with that because he sees banning a couple of fascists to maintain his business as a sort of lesser evil.
