I think some people are vaguely aware of the solidarity between the Irish and Palestinians (my grandma grew up Catholic in Northern Ireland and it informs my politics as a communist). It’s not just a symbolic thing. A lot of their respective problems in the 20th century were caused by Literally the Same Fucking Guy

The number of former British occupations that are Like That is pretty huge. You can also include the situation with India and Pakistan (including the current Hindu/Muslim conflict within India proper), the Tamil and Sinhalese conflicts in Sri Lanka, the persecution of the Igbo in Nigeria, and probably a lot more that I'm not remembering.

You could theoretically argue that they also left behind the seeds for the American Civil War, the further genocide of indigenous Americans, and the structurally racist society in the United States today, but I'd like to think we managed all that largely on our own.

a fun fact I learned recently is that "hava nagila" was composed in 1918 specifically in celebration of the defeat of the ottomans and the balfour declaration, which reduced the amount of a bop it is by about 99.9%

solidarity with palestine is more or less the default stance in ireland so after I moved to england and found out that it was a decidedly Controversial View it blew my fucking mind. I didn't know that about balfour but it absolutely fucking figures.

I won't blame them for America's treatment of Native Americans, but I will wholeheartedly hold them just as responsible as Canada for the residential and day schools. The church headed by the British Monarch ran the school my Great Grandmother attended, and they need to answer for that.
