Genma Saotome and Gendo Ikari are both iconic anime bad dads; however, the ways they are bad are very different.
If they switched places, Gendo Saotome turning Ranma into a gender-bending harem protagonist would have been deliberate, as part of some decade-long scheme to resurrect his dead wife; on the other hand, Genma Ikari would get Shinji into the robot more or less accidentally, as the culmination of a series of actions which were all motivated by this ideal of Manliness™-expressed-through-martial-arts and which were individually simultaneously self-serving, shortsighted, neglectful, and without Shinji's consent or even soliciting his opinion. Nodoka would still somehow find a way to be transphobic.
