not using a content warning because i think content warnings should be reserved for stuff that people who have actual PTSD triggers need to be warned about, to skip or steel themselves. CWs are serious. you can use a details tag like this to hide a post instead:

edit: testing the "read more" instead of a details tag
edit: putting it back because making a "read more" with three hyphens does not work and just turns into a horizontal rule

just scroll on past. or click this to feed your brain worms

just discovered that Dreamwidth, the site "based on the Livejournal codebase" whose cofounder created a deranged thread about why Cohost's boilerplate TOS is "abusive," has the following sentence in its Diversity Statement:

"Conservative or liberal, libertarian or socialist — we believe it's possible for people of all viewpoints and persuasions to come together and learn from each other. "

maybe people who use that website *should* be actively warned away from cohost

also i saw someone in the quote tweets there say "Mastadon was created by a Russian" as a reason not to use Mastodon, which further reinforces my point

in reply to @atomicthumbs's post:

on one hand, it doesn't feel great that after me leaving russia in a hurry, people will see my country of origin as a red flag

on the other hand, i think it's really convenient for the obnoxious people who judge others by country of origin to filter themselves out from my page

that whole thread is a giant mess, and they dont even know what they're talking about. they complained about you not being able to make multiple accounts for multiple purposes. yeah no shit sherlock because cohost has a feature to do that without making accounts. the dude just wants to ruin cohosts rep to boost his own site, and it kinda works. its so dumb

for me it looks like a horizontal rule in the preview but folds/unfolds when posted. also if it's right underneath the first line in the post it turns that first line into the title instead of becoming a "read more" disclosure for some reason

its one of the most bad faith readings ive ever seen of... anything. did the mother fucker even use the site before posting. 'it prevents people from having a main blog and a fandom blog' come on. pages. its right at the top

A little context from somebody who was there for this migration: Dreamwidth was created in response to Livejournal's degradation after being taken over by a Russian oligarch with Kremlin ties. It was basically seen as the upstart community-driven alternative to a social networking site that had been demonstrably and quickly destroyed by the interests of capital and power.

I feel like there's something in this freakout that draws from that community pathos, especially how much the rant resembles fandom callout posts from late-aughts LJ

i've been dropping goofs and gags about how we've lost the 35 year old doctor who yaoi enthusiast who says "holy shartballs" as an expletive regularly demographic and how they're CRUCIAL to cohost's success but honestly i could also do without viral reblog chain convos involving supernatural gifs that are just funny enough to boost but not funny enough to love, so long as my cool touch-starved furry and tech nerd friends are on here

last night that thread washed up on our TL from someone we follow that definitely wouldn't know any better so we just rolled our eyes at the phrase "Abusive TOS" and thought it would be at least an amusing read to scan out of curiosity until it kept going and going and going with increasingly bizarre worst-possible-intent interpretations and dissections of each very standard sounding line and timestamps suggesting several continuous hours of this and descended into unfunny namecalling and at one point a mention of getting mad enough to throw the phone and almost hitting a pet ???? almost every QRT was someone saying just 'oof' or 'wow thanks you saved me, guess i'll not join / delete my account' lol
