disclaimer: I did not make this pattern. I'm just translating it. The original video can be found here.

second disclaimer: this is my first time writing out a pattern ever so if anything is unclear please let me know!

photo of a white cat in a crocheted collar a lot of u really liked the collar i made for my cats! so heres a translation and transcript of the pattern i followed.

materials

  1. 25g (about 1/4 the size of a normal skein) each of yarn in the following colors:
  • red
  • beige
  1. a tiny bit of green yarn
  2. 3.5mm/4mm crochet hook

the original video uses 5 ply yarn (similar to worsted weight yarn in US terms) and a 3.5mm hook. I tend to crochet on the tight side so I used 4 ply yarn (I think that's DK in US terms but I've never used DK yarn so I can't be certain) and 4mm hook.

the yarn weight and hook size aren't going to matter too much for this pattern as long as it's not obviously too loose or so tight that it makes working the stitches difficult.

notes

abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl: slip stitch
  • ps: puff stitch
  • yo: yarn over
  • r: round
  • inc: increase. make 2 sc/dc in the same stitch. (I also write these as "2 sc/dc in same stitch" where it's more clear to do so.)

puff stitch notes

please finish reading this entire section before working on the puff stitches!! (r3 of second beige portion)

the cherries on the two sides of the collar are made with puff stitches in a contrasting (red) colored yarn. to keep the color switch clean, switch to the red yarn before completing the dc that is before the puff stitch, and use the red yarn to pull through the last two loops of that dc, so that you will have red colored yarn to start the puff stitch with.

puff stitches are made of 5 uncompleted double crochets, which are double crochets where you do not pull through the last 2 loops (like we did to switch colors), and continue onto the next stitch with the original loop and one new yo loop still on your hook.

screenshot showing 5 uncompleted double crochets

to make a puff stitch, work 5 uncompleted dc in the same stitch, ending with 6 loops total on your needle. for a normal puff stitch we would then yarn over and pull through all the loops, but for this pattern we need to switch back to the beige yarn, and use the beige yarn to pull through all 6 loops.

while making the 5 uncompleted dc's, make sure you're hiding the red yarn tail inside your stitches but leaving the beige yarn hanging on the back. also hide the red yarn, both tail and working yarn, in the 3 dc between the 2 ps's.

(if that was unclear, i recommend watching the original video! the puff stitches start at around 12:00.)

misc

  • ch 2 at the beginning of a row does not count as a dc.
  • there's a tiny bit of needlework involved to embroider the stem of the cherries. if you're like me and hate needlework, I promise it's very fast and easy!!

pattern

bottom section

with red yarn:

ch 47.

  • r1: starting from the second chain from the hook, sc in every stich across. turn.
  • r2: ch 2. [1 dc in first stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in the same stitch. skip 2 stitches.]*repeat until one -stitch remains. 1 dc, ch 1, 1dc in the same stitch. turn.
  • r3: ch 2. [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in each ch1 space across. turn.
  • r4: ch 2. [2 dc, ch 2, 2dc] in each ch1 space across. turn.
  • r5-r6: ch 2. [3 dc, ch 2, 3dc] in each ch2 space across. cast off.

top section

switch to beige yarn.

ch 47.

  • r1: starting from the second chain from the hook, sc in every stich across. turn.
  • r2: ch 2. [9 dc, 1 dc inc] 4 times. end with 6 dc. turn.
  • r3: ch 2. 1 dc in the first 2 stitches. 1 dc in the 3rd stitch, but do not pull through the last 2 loops. switch to red yarn and pull red yarn through last 2 loops. 1 ps in the next stitch (see puff stitch notes), switching back to beige yarn at the end. 2 dc in next stitch (5th stitch from start of row). 1 dc in next stitch, switching to red yarn before completing. 1 ps in next stitch, switching back to beige yarn at the end. 1 dc in each of next 2 stitches. 2 dc in same stitch. repeat [4 dc, 1 dc inc] until 7 stitches remain, switching to red yarn before completing last dc. 1 ps, switching to beige yarn at the end. 2 dc in same stitch. 1 dc, switching to red yarn. 1 ps, switching to beige yarn at the end. 1 dc in each of next 2 stitches. 1 dc inc in last stitch. turn.
  • take a breath because that was the hardest part. for both you and me
  • r4: ch 1. repeat [3 sc, sc inc, 3 sc] until end of row. turn.
  • r5: ch1 1. repeat [1 sc, ch 3, skip 1] until end of row, ending on a 1 sc. turn. cast off.

straps and assembly

with beige yarn, ch 4. in the first chain, work one puff stitch (no need to worry about changing colors this time!!). ch 4 again. work one puff stitch in the stitch that finished the last puff stitch (circled in image)

screenshot circling stitch above the 5 incomplete dc of the puff stitch

fold the two puff stitches together and slip stitch into the very first chain (where we started making the first puff stitch).

screenshot of crocheting into the first chain

ch 45. place the top and bottom sections together. sl through first sc's of both pieces, and in every stitch across, joining the two pieces together. ch 45. make another pom with 2 puff stitches like before (1 ps, ch4, 1 ps in first ps, sl to start of first ps). cast off.

clean up the yarn ends.

stems

using a double strand of green yarn and darning needle, embroider the stems on the 2 cherries, entering from the back of the top section. how you do it doesn't really matter, but this is the order the original video did it in. embroider the horizontal stem first, then the 2 stems leading out to the cherries (the video uses single strand of yarn and makes 2 stitches for each stem. I used double strand of the green yarn so I only had to make one stitch for each stem.)

tie off yarn ends.

animated text saying "and that's it!"

now you just need to find a fur baby to attach this to. if you make one, please show me! happy crocheting 💙
