We realized in a discussion a few months ago that a lot of people younger than us have never seen art in this style - large scale black-and-white pixel art with hand dithering, meant for viewing on a low-resolution display. It could get quite elaborate. We were just able to dig up a clip art collection that was famous for being some of the best, in the day, and thought we'd share a little of it.

The copyright notice on this page reads: "Be Mine" from WetPaint™, ©1986 Dubl-Click Software, Inc. We have tried and failed to find evidence that this is still being sold, or that the creators are still reachable; otherwise we wouldn't be sharing it.

Fascinatingly, the one place where this art style thrives nowadays... is the Splatoon game series? Your in-game posts are composed on a black and white low resolution canvas, and some players make stunning stuff with it! (Granted, a lot of them use third party software to input a pre-rendered image, but still.)
