So turns out if you update your username on mobile, you still get prompted to change on desktop, except it shows you your new username with a #0000 discriminator attached to it
if you have an old version of mobile, people with a new username will show with a #0000 discriminator. i can't tell if the new usernames just have a hidden fixed discriminator or if it's a backwards compatibility api hack or if those are meaningfully different
supposedly on unofficial third party clients the discriminator is actually just a single zero now (as opposed to four of them), but i guess the client renders four digits
they changed the generic avatar algorithm as well (used to be 5 options and it was based on discriminator mod 5, now it's user id mod 6)
Also if someone is accessing discord on a slightly older version, your display name will be totally ignored and they will only see your username
