I really can't get over how this game I'm currently playing (article coming soon!) looks. It's... A Game With A Style, that's for sure. Like... it's "bad" but... this is also everything I thought the future of gaming would be at the same time. It's... ambitiously bad, maybe? Good in a different way?

I want more games to look like this.

I think.

I don't know any more

I think it has such a charm specifically because it's not exactly a "failure" - it's a product of trying its best with new technology that nobody has really figured out yet; it's blazing new trails, and on the strictly nostalgic angle... it's ABSOLUTELY like you said: This is what our first glimpses of the 3D future looked like! The first stumbling steps on the road to that future.

I've actually been thinking a lot about what it would take to make a modern game look like this in real time... and it would most probably need a LOT of work; modern engines just have much more sophisticated rendering technology, specifically to refine the output and avoid things looking like this - you'd probably have to rewrite all the material properties to replace them with more primitive versions, rewrite lighting and shadow systems... basically ripping out 25 years of sophisticated upgrades to extremely complicated tech, and replacing it - and it'd fight you vehemently every step of the way.
