Question for Sonic fans: how’d Sonic Colours Ultimate turn out? Did they get the feel right? Better than playing the Wii one in Dolphin?
I don't know personally, but I feel like this post indicates that uh... they messed up somewhere?
Having spoken to people who would know, it sounds like Sega was ramping up to develop Colors Ultimate internally right when covid hit and lockdowns+infections wrecked the project. It was one of those "open secret" sorts of projects, originally intended to launch in 2020, but was internally delayed to 2021 before being announced. Blind Squirrel (who did Mass Effect Legendary Edition) were brought in to put out all the fires and get the game into a functional state, but there was only so much they could do with the time and budget they were given.
I think Mammon's post is about hoping Godot gets more high profile games to use their engine so they don't have to keep leaning so hard on something that's patched together with chewing gum and duct tape.
Ahhh, yeah, that would explain a lot. Many good projects with high hopes just got completely wrecked by COVID...
And yeah, that was my read on Mammon's post too, to be clear.
I've objected to keep my distance from it. Sounds like it never got fixed up quite as much as it should have after the rocky launch. The thing that bothers me most is that it launched with stereo separation issues, and their fix for that was to downmix the entire game, including the music, to mono.
I'm also not a fan of the way Ultimate looks. The original Colors was trying some pretty advanced lighting effects, especially for the Wii, and Ultimate settles for more standard rendering techniques that feel like downgrades -- sometimes minor, sometimes not. The lighting in the original game just looks better to me.
"Feel"-wise, everything I've heard suggests Colors Ultimate was built from some kind of port of the gameplay engine, so it should be nearly identical to the Wii game in terms of controls. And I liked the idea behind the enhanced homing attack, where you get kind of a rhythm game timing mechanic, and if you hit it perfectly, you refill some of your boost meter for free. Colors was a game that made you ration out your boost meter, and truth be told, I've been using an "infinite boost meter" code in Dolphin for years because it annoys me how little the original game gives you. Them giving you a little extra to work with in Ultimate is nice.
But unless it's under $10, maybe even waiting until it's under $5, I will personally be avoiding it in favor of sticking to Dolphin. The new features (Metal Sonic races, cosmetics) just don't sound worth it, or make up for what's still wrong with it.
