Loving the CEO's desperate attempt to explain why they're keeping around a feature that all their users hate and also no one uses
That last sentence is a doozy "Look forward to us maybe getting rid of it"
can't imagine this was helping on the expenses side of things given the costs of video and all that
Right? It has to cost so much to run, to serve it to an audience of about 12 people
incredible lol "for contractual reasons I can't say we're getting rid of it but wink wink nudge nudge we are getting rid of it once we can, which we can't right now for contractual reasons"
AFAIK ‘tumblr live’ is just a rebrand of an existing, obscure live streaming platform that is probably just paying Tumblr to be on it.
Yeah, I found a post that mentioned apparently most of the content is also just being restreamed from other sites to fill gaps when there aren't any actual tumblr users streaming. which is usually https://katisconfused.tumblr.com/post/711942063557689344
Absolutely amazing stuff here. Great business brain
lmao theyre being forced at (contractual) gunpoint to keep it 😂
When someone calls a site feature dog shit and the response is:
"Yes, it's dog shit. But—"
TIL Tumblr even added a live feature considering i last used it in early Dec 2022 to promote a video
and then apparently later that month was when they added this lmao
it's funny to me even if I never will really understand why a porn ban was why Tumblr fell off a cliff (In my circles on tumblr, it was fairly SFW and very chill back in the day, 2013-2015; i've been in NSFW spaces and made such content myself but Tumblr was never a place I thought as one lol, but then again I mainly was in the Ask Blogging roleplay sphere) and made users leave en masse... Yet this live service is literally the worst garbage porn bot hub imaginable. And you can't permanently hide it for good?!?! wtf?!?
i'm gonna guess the people who left in 2018 did not get enticed by the content on live and come back lol
my recollection is that part of it was that auto-moderation systems, which are always bad, were auto-deleting/banning not just porn but lots and lots of images which were decidedly not porn but might be considered edge-cases by a robot, along with ridiculous and weird cases like a photo of an owl being banned as nudity (speculation at the time was that the round face was being interpretted as a boob). so that effects a much wider range of content creators and enjoyers than just pornography and just generally creates a shitty and paranoid environment to post your art to.
additionally, banning porn does not actually create a porn-free site, but it does mean that people who posted porn were not tagging it correctly in an effort to avoid the ban. i have not actually heard of this happening to anyone so this is speculative, but you may actually be more likely to see porn that you dont want to see after then ban, bc black-listing various nsfw tags like #porn, #nudes, etc was rendered totally ineffective at keeping that off your dash or your tag searches.
anyways thats a couple ways the porn ban negatively impacted way more people than just pornographers and porn-enjoyers on tumblr. there is also the cascading effect that any group of people leaving a social media site has. people leaving leads to more people leaving
I do remember seeing a lot of falsely tagged/flagged posts around that time, now that i think about it, though none of my own posts were struck. (likely because I stuck mostly to text) I logged in a yearish ago and a small bunch of my friends still were doing things there, though now instead of ask blogging RPs they were more or less sharing art or the latest thoughts on new media, but I was pleasantly surprised to see some old pals still sticking around. A ton of them definitely left though and I wish I knew where some of em went ;w;
genuinely unable to comprehend how they managed to get into being contractually obligated to do this
