Wow, I don’t remember it with YouTube specifically but I definitely remember video on the web being called “Flash video”.
And then Netflix upended everything by using Microsoft Silverlight…
There was an API that let you embed and control YouTube videos from within Flash things! I toyed with making a tool for building laserdisc-style FMV reflex games based on YouTube videos and I'm still sad I never finished it
