One of the surreal parts of being on the early web was that it was still during the US cryptography export regulation era. When you wanted to download Netscape, you had to say whether you wanted the US version or the "export version", where the export version had cut-down SSL support that anyone could crack in no time. I think it took until like 2000 for them to finally let everyone just download the real version? But I remember for a few years before that it was still easy to get the super secret US version of the browser just by downloading it from Netscape's own site.
