Starting to wonder if "join the discord for updates on [whatever]" is a phenomenon that's mainly targeting people who joined discord much more recently than I did? Because I'm already in like 50 discords I'm not able to pay attention to, and thinking about joining any more gives me a nervous breakdown. But I realize if I joined discord within like 1-2 years I'd still be in the process of building my giant discord katamari and wouldn't be as resistant to the idea yet

Yeah, seems like it. But unlike bookmark lists there's a technical maximum server limit, and it's not even that high.
I think it also has an element of: people under 20 have a lot more free time to go check their 20 discords after school, I know I used to spend hours in IRC back in the day, and I could absolutely not do that now bc I got shit to do
Oh yeah, I totally agree that's a thing. It's just that when I start to see every small indie game have "join our discord" as the only way to find out about game updates, I start to wonder how well this is going to scale in the future. Because if it becomes that instead of "wishlist us on Steam" it's going to get to be a lot more than just 20 discords.
i think it is pretty bad tbh. i don't want to join a Gamer Discord 95% of the time, and i have so much experience modding discord servers to know that it sounds extremely unfun.
i'm actually bringing back forums when i start to open up dev stuff again. join the forum to post your bug. i will not enable you to have live conversations that i have to spend every second looking at. we're going old school with it
Discord already has enough trouble reliably notifying me about the things I actually want to be notified about. I’d hate to use it as my RSS reader too.
