A bit back Aura asked me for recommendations of jazz that's available on Bandcamp, and with Bandcamp Friday coming up I thought I'd post it here too for anyone who's interested. This isn't a definitive tour or anything, just reflective of my personal tastes.
Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement
Kamasi Washington's one of the most interesting jazz musicians today - a soaring, cinematic sound that experiments with countless genres. This is his latest album and a good introduction.
Gideon Nxumalo - Jazz Fantasia
A classic South African jazz album from 1962, it's an interesting mix of traditional jazz from the period with traditional South African instruments.
Various artists - Pyramid Pieces 1 & 2
A pair of compilations of Australian jazz from 1969-1980. Essential albums in my opinion, covering a wide range of subgenres. Please listen to Allan Zavod's track Circles from the second comp, which is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking jazz songs I've ever heard.
Duval Timothy - Sen Am
Duval Timothy has a fascinating minimalist, impressionist sound that's like no one else I've heard. I quite like his music, and Sen Am is maybe my favourite.
London Brew - Self-titled
Wildly experimental free jazz interpretation of Bitches Brew. Take a listen - I don't think I can properly describe the sound.
Pat Coil - Music for Humans… and other species
One of the things I love the most is when old 80s fusion jazz guys are able to just keep at it. Music for Humans is a recent album from Pat Coil, who I originally knew from his 80s band Recoil; it's all new compositions, frequently chill, with a sound that makes it clear where his musical roots are from.
