In the scene from the Revue Starlight movie where Maya and Claudine are playing shogi, I absolutely love that it's specifically the animal shogi variant for young children, not the real game. At a glance you might think "oh wow, they're playing such a smart game" but no, they're playing the version for seven year olds

This said 5x5 Mini Shogi has a really interesting design and there is real depth to it. I don't know if the animal version is the same game.
Yeah, they seem to be playing the 5x6 variant of the animal version, which is their one for intermediate players. So not quite as baby as the 3x4 board, but it's still a funny contrast.
